Visual Inspection
The first thing that you want to check for here is the structural integrity of the chimney itself. And that’s something that you can check for yourself just by a quick visual inspection.

Fire Worthiness
The next most important point is to make sure that the chimney itself is actually fire worthy. You can see what’s up above the roofline, but the part that’s from the roofline - down you’re at the disadvantage of not being able to visually inspect that - so you’re going to probably need to get somebody out with a chimney inspection camera to run down the chimney.

Dangerous Fumes
The third is to find out if any fumes are coming back into the house from your gas hot water heater, your gas furnace, your oil furnace, or even a wood stove. The oil and wood stove fumes are the most easily detectable because you can smell them right away, but your gas fumes are going to be the ones that are the most insidious and for that reason you want to have your heating company or competent chimney person come out and check to make sure that you have proper draft and that all the fumes are venting out of the house.
